Do you ever feel like you’re stuck in extremes—constantly swinging between overachieving and burnout? Learning how to find balance when life feels overwhelming has been one of the most transformative parts of my healing journey. I used to equate survival with self-denial. I believed rest was weakness and productivity was proof of worth. But when I let myself feel again, it was like being hit by a wave I didn’t see coming. It taught me: peace and progress can exist at the same time.
1. Recognizing the Extremes
For much of my life, I had two speeds: all-in or completely shut down. I thought this was normal. It wasn’t. It was survival mode disguised as discipline.
Ask yourself:
- Do I prioritize tasks over how I actually feel?
- Do I feel guilt when I rest or numbness when I work?
This awareness isn’t about judgment. It’s about starting to tell the truth.
2. Redefining What Balance Means for You
Balance doesn’t mean everything is equal. It means everything has its place. It means giving yourself permission to ebb and flow instead of chasing constant output.
Try asking:
- What would a balanced day feel like—not just look like?
- What do I need to create small pockets of peace in my routine?
For me, it started with journaling. Then intentional pauses. Then breath. And slowly, I started living more with myself than against myself.
3. Simple Practices That Anchor You
These tools helped me stop swinging between extremes and find a rhythm I could actually live in:
- The 2-Minute Rule: Feeling overwhelmed? Give yourself just two minutes to start (or stop) something.
- Mindful Breathing: Three intentional breaths when chaos rises.
- Scheduled Rest: Treat breaks like sacred appointments—walks, naps, or creating without an outcome.
Balance isn’t found in perfection. It’s built in the small, sustainable choices.
4. For the Days You Feel Stuck
Some days, the middle ground feels unreachable. You might fall back into extremes. That doesn’t mean you failed—it means you’re human.
Remember:
- You don’t need to get it perfect.
- Rest is not regression.
- Even small shifts count as progress.
Learning to find balance when life feels overwhelming is a process. Give yourself permission to be in it.
You don’t have to live at the edge of exhaustion.
There’s space for softness. There’s room for breath.
Ask yourself today:
Where can I create a moment of middle ground in my day?
Let the answer be small. Let it be enough.
